I don't know about the choice of pubs, but it did get better - from the initial plan for the Guildford Arms (rejected) to the Cafe Royal, the Abbotsford, The Thistle and the Oxford, as we went on.

Before that, a short school day, which gave time for a bit of allotmenteering, lunch at the Shore and a lot of messing around after.
