Chile in Oban

One of my favourite plants at Arduaine was Asteranthera ovata, a small, soft hairy climber from temperate regions of Chile and Argentina. I've seen it growing in profusion on the lower slopes of the Andes in Chile. Reasonably hardy, it enjoys moist but bright conditions and covers mossy rocks and tree trunks with its small round leaves and bright flowers. It's a member of the Gesneriaceae, which includes African violets.

I brought some cuttings with me when I retired in 2016 and planted them on the mossy rocks at the bottom of my garden slope. This week two flowers have appeared for the first time.
