Vila Algarve

This residence would once have been occupied by well-to-do Portuguese. During the struggle for independence it became a building where the Portuguese secret police conducted torture against freedom fighters, some accounts of which have made it into books. Since that time it has sat derelict, and apparently even the homeless avoid it due to the association.

Rumours abound that it will be developed into a museum. For now, it’s an eerie monument on Maputo’s streets.
