Paxton House water wheel

Following ten years of research, funding applications and restoration work, Scotland’s only surviving 18th century water wheel and beam pump are in action again. A pump drove the wheel which supplied clean water from the springs in the deep, narrow wooded valley below Paxton House.  Ingeniously, the dirty water from the nearby rivers of the Tweed and Linn Burn drove the wheel so the spring water arrived in pristine condition at the house. (See website
Extras: The wooden staircase down to the water wheel, and the Paxton Art Gallery with live piano music for visitors to enjoy.
In 1988, the last laird John David Home Robertson, gave the country house and its 80 acre estate to the nation. The Paxton Trust is now responsible  for the preservation of the grounds and House.
