Orkney- Day 10

It’s a lucky girl who gets to have tea and cake while watching ring tailed lemurs playing in front of her eyes or having a cow take an interest in her lens. While she goes walk about.
It’s been a busy day making full use of daughter #2 and the hire car.
We met at Julia’s café at first light, navigating through 3 bus loads of tourists being decanted from presumably another cruise ship berthed at Kirkwall, before walking round the headland towards Warbeth beach just as the ferry set sail for Scrabster. It was a mild, humid morning with the cloud level low on the Hoy Hills and by the time we returned uphill round by the road, we were very hot.

The car was the answer and we drove up to Birsay, supposedly for lunch, but the queue to be seated was such a deterrent that we continued to the Orkney Brewery and had oatcakes and mackerel pâté with salad there.

Now the mist was really thick and visibility down to a hundred yards, but with the County Agricultural Show taking place in Kirkwall there were few cars on the road.

The next stop was Fern Valley Wildlife Centre overlooking the islands of Wyre and Rousay- at least I was told that, but nothing was visible except water.
Back to Stromness and quiet contemplation while did Jane some work on her computer and I read the paper. It is so nice to have company in the flat.
