In Memoriam
Droog and I are spending the weekend in Lincoln, where they are having a 40s weekend. We left the hotel, on the outskirts of the city, and asked the receptionist to call a taxi for us; nothing was available for two hours, so we walked to the bus stop, pleased that there was apparently a bus every half hour. Almost an hour later, in rain and strong winds, we returned to the hotel to rethink the plan. Looking on the internet, we saw that the flypast and the vintage stalls were cancelled today, because of the weather, so we decided to go to Woodhall Spa instead and had a very pleasant afternoon there.
This is the memorial to 617 Squadron, the Dambusters. It was very moving to read the names - there were many Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders as well as British.
Tomorrow we’ll try the 40s weekend again. Who said that no plan survives contact with reality?
