Skara Brae and Ring of Brodgar
The Orkney archipelago is rich with Neolithic sites.
We visited Skara Brae which is 5300 years old and located next to a rather fine Sandy Beach and the Ring of Brodgar.
The weather was very sunny and the island was magical.
In the afternoon we had planned to go to the Italian Chapel but diverted into the Annual Classic Vehicles Show.
California Girl raised on a ranch started her driving career at the age of 4 by driving the " Grey Fergie" tractor into the Barn door. Not her fault. Her father had left it in gear.
She has been fascinated by tractors since and there were plenty of tractors on display from immaculate restorations to the extra David Brown rustbucket which had been hauled out of a scrapyard had a new battery connected and started with no great difficulty.
In the background is the good ship Balmoral.
The community also put on an amazing exhibition of artifacts and memorabilia which featured the role of the islands in WW2. The population rose from 10,000 to 110,000.
