Choices
This is the view from the room we are staying in on our family break in Glasgow. It is looking from Charing Cross to the Kingston Bridge over the River Clyde. The Kingston Bridge is a ten lane road bridge and is the largest urban bridge in the United Kingdom, taking the M8 through the centre of Glasgow, carrying around 150,000 vehicles across daily! A phenomenal piece of engineering, designed by William Fairhurst and built by Logan-Marples Ridgeway and opened by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1970, at which time it was designed to handle only 20,000 vehicles a day! And it is alleged that the fourth man in the Williamwood bank robbery is buried in the pillars of the bridge!!!
I came to look at the view a few moments ago, just to drink in the beauty of the city at night and the vast openness of the view before me. Clouds are skudding rapidly overhead, hurried in by the blowing gale, and the moon and stars are bright above the city. Looking at the office buildings nearby and the residential buildings further away, I love to try and imagine what goes on behind those windows, blinds and curtains!
10 lanes leaves the driver with a multitude of choices - I detest driving over the Clyde here as one minute I can be tootling along in 2 lanes then I'm surrounded by cars in multiple lanes! And life is about choices too, isn't it? The every day choices of what to eat, what to wear, where to go ... the more difficult choices of moving the family to a new ( of sorts!) area, with the choice of where to school the children, where to live and where to work ... to the downright scary choices of whether to have life threatening surgery to save your life.
2013 sees a multitude of choices ahead for me, my family and dear friends. My prayer is that God will guide us all on this path of life which truly is a daring adventure!!
