An “artistic” day in Milan
Sunday
Unfortunately, Jen was leaving us today to return to the U.S. - work was calling! Milan airport is a fair way out of the city, so she had to take the train, and needed to leave the hotel at about 5.30am! Roger got up to see her safely to the station , and her friend Magali got up too to walk with them too, then they both went back to bed for a couple of hours! Magali wasn’t returning to Geneva until late afternoon, so we had the pleasure of her company for most of the day. The morning was spent at the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan’s main art gallery, located in the Palazzo Brera. In earlier years the palace served as a convent and as a national library and was only converted into a museum until the 19th century, under Napoleon. The area around the museum is a pleasant area to wander, with its cobbled streets, and so this is what we did afterwards, visiting a couple churches and enjoying a pleasant lunch. Finally we visited the museum of La Scala, the famous opera house, which was actually very interesting, and allowed you to get a look into the main auditorium. By now, it was time to return to the hotel for Magali to pick up her bag, and walk with her to the station for her train. Later in the evening we went out for what proved to be a very disappointing dinner. It had good reviews on Trip advisor, and sounded interesting, “a small authentic, family-run place”...or words to that effect, but we found the food rather unappetizing - especially Roger and Laura who decided to be a bit adventurous - Roger ate his, but Laura ate only a few mouthfuls! We had almost gone there last night, but I think it was Jen found another place which we were very pleased with, so we’re just pleased we didn’t go there last night!
My collage shows a fresco in the art museum, top left, entrance to the museum, bottom left, other scenes from the Brera district, top right and second from left at the bottom, La Scala, bottom right, two exterior shots, and the striking interior above, and our delicious lunch.
