Hard Rock

Low tide and the rocky foreshore and serrated rocks very visible.

These are the rocks on which, on 1st September 1263, King Haakon of Norway’s battle fleet floundered during a storm.

While the Norwegians were salvaging their boats a Scottish army contingent arrived on the scene and a fierce battle ensued.

However the Battle of Largs was not decisive, the Scots withdrew and the Norwegians were eventually able sail for Orkney where they planned to overwinter and return to the Clyde the following year.

Unfortunately King Haakon took ill, subsequently died and was buried in St Magnus Cathedral In Kirkwall.
