Lodge No.1
The Lodge of Edinburgh, St Mary's Chapel No. 1 is the longest-standing continuously-operating Fringe venue, where today we attended a show entitled The Tartan Pimpernel. This is the nickname of Rev. Dr. Donald Caskie. Mr Flum has read his autobiography, I have still to begin.
We learned much about this heroic minister when on our U3A Geology field trip to Islay in May of last year: among our party was his nephew who gave a short lecture and showed us round the round church of Bowmore, where Donald Caskie attended while growing up and is now buried. The show today, with a cast of only four, focused on his involvement in the German invasion of France in WW11. Graeme Dallas, as Rev Caskie, gave an impressive performance, being on set the whole play and with most of the dialogue.
The Amber Alerted weather arrived halfway through the show, with impressive thunderclaps that could have contributed to the atmosphere had the play required a battlefield scene! We exited to steady rain and the streets awash with running water, to collect our tickets for more shows.
