Lotus Seed Pods: Can You Hear Me Now?

Last week, the second lotus bloom opened on the Arboretum's lily pond. I have been having lots of fun keeping an eye on them. The seed pods are such odd-looking things when they are done blooming. I'm not sure if I think they more resemble eye stalks for some huge, hidden underwater beast, or shower heads, or microphones.

The pods are in the very middle of the lily pond. If they were closer to the edge, I'd be tempted to tap them and ask, "Is this thing on? Is this thing on? Can you hear me now?" I know, I know, I'm easily amused! I do keep myself entertained.

Also of note: you may already have spotted a tiny damselfly sitting on the upper seed pod in this photo, so I know I'm not the only one enjoying them!
