I have been reliably informed by some folks on Facebook's Insects and Invertebrates group( just so you know I'm not the clever clogs you think I am) that this is a  Brown Band-Eyed Horsefly.  View 'large'.

I've had a busy day cutting back shrubs and removing and digging out an evergreen honeysuckle that's nothing but a thug.  That's another fence for JJ to paint before I consider whether to put in a climbing rose.

Forgot to mention that about a week ago JJ saw a buzzard drop out of the sky and snatch a live pigeon.  Interesting.
