When my son was about 15, he and a friend decided to found an aesthetic-political movement. They got as far as writing down these four basic principles, which he posted on the wall of his bedroom. After he moved permanently to New York, I converted his room to my office — but though everything else in the room is now changed, I have kept the taped-up note, which still strikes me as a pretty good list of principles.
