All go

A beautiful sunny warm day at the Fringe....and the town was heaving! We started with a wander to get breakfast in the French cafe (comes from watching a programme about food in Paris the other evening and jambon beurre baguettes being in our heads!), then some browsing in Sahara's sale before seeing a very moving but funny and brilliantly performed play called Madame Ovary by an ex-colleague of mine's daughter. It was a very emotional performance as so many of her family and friends were there and it was about her experience of ovarian cancer last year. One of those fringe gems -laughing and crying in turns throughout.
We then looked around the Talbot Rice Gallery Samson Young exhibition - interesting film of a silent orchestra (well - the music was silent but he'd kept the other noises - the breathing, the sounds of the keys tapping and clicking) before heading to see a sort of shadow play/live action/projection/live music performance about Mary Shelley and her writing Frankenstein. Really well done, quite unique, by a group called Manual Cinema.
A little sit in the sun with a drink - so unusual for Edinburgh in August (it won't last!) then over to see a friend's son in a play about prison and drug dealing. We weren't expecting a lot but it was good and he was excellent - nice surprise.
From there straight down to see Scottish Ballet do a premiere of their new adaptation of The Crucible. Very stark in places but great performances and set. I love the way this company do the coordinated ensemble movements as well as the lyrical solo/duo pieces. Home via some noodles and roti. All that and 16,000 steps - good stuff!
