Vernazza to Corniglia
Monday
Today we hiked in the other direction to the village of Corniglia. Corniglia is the middle village of the five, and sits atop a 100m-high rocky promontory surrounded by vineyards. Unlike the other villages, it has no direct access to the sea, other than steep steps leading down to a rocky cove. Arriving in the village, hot and tired after our hike, we first found a cafe, with a lovely terrace affording beautiful views over the surrounding mountains. After exploring the village, including the beautifully decorated church, and seeking out different vantage points, we returned to Vernazza by train, entailing going down the 377 shallow brick step zig-zag Lardarina staircase to the station, located at sea level, the platform lying between two tunnels through the cliffs - better going down than up! Not having had a swim at Corniglia, we went for a swim in Vernazza once we returned.
The top right photo in my collage is the view over Vernazza as we left in the morning, bottom left a scene along the trail. Above that is a picture of Roger Jen and Laura posing by an old wine press in one of the alleys, and the remaining two different views of Corniglia, the bottom one showing some of the terraced vineyards.
