POG's Journal

My Day:
Woke up when I woke up… unfortunately it was 5:30.
Went and picked up the peak flow thing so that I can take readings once a week to see if the PowerBreathe device is making any difference.
Did some laundry and had lunch then just tinkered around with stuff to make my next visit to the velodrome more organized.
Whizzed out in the car with the roof down for something to do
Dinner shortly then feet up in front of the TV

Cycling:
Day 23/92
Yesterday we got to the velodrome with plenty of time to spare, with 150 miles to get there you must allow time for traffic, but it was an uninterrupted journey, so all was good.
The first session was two hours then the second was immediately after for one hour. Session one was split into two groups, Sprinters and Endurance, unfortunately they did not have an old duffers’ category, so I was in the endurance group. Each group was on the track for about 20 minutes and believe me I was more than grateful for my 20-minute rest whilst the sprinters were on…
I had the Garmin on the bike with all the sensors and my mate’s wife was videoing me. The plan was to survive the sessions and look at the video to see how my position looked as I’ve had to raise the bars quite a lot because of the hip problem, the Garmin to see how the heart, speed and cadence were looking on the track.
The second session was behind the Derny (motorbike) but after a couple of hours I was well past my sell by date and could not cope with the speed.
We had a good run home and no traffic, as I was sitting in the car the pain seemed to be whizzing round my body, from the legs, then my back but legs seemed okay, then my feet…
When home I looked at the numbers from the Garmin and it was obvious the lack of fitness on my side and my heart was doing quite a bit of work. It’s not surprising, also it’s only the second time I’ve ridden the track since 2006 so a little shock to the body.
The video was the most distressing thing as I did not look to good on the bike and my left knee keeps sticking out, even at 30 mph… I guess there is not much I can do about it other than suck it up. Next session on the track 11th Aug.

Photo:
Charged up this old camcorder so that I can film myself on the track bike and see if I can tweak the position, so I don’t look so crazy…  I’m not to confident there is a solution but it's worth a try. Also, there is the peak flow thing.

More tomorrow
