Deans Cottage
A wonderful piece of history is Deans Cottage, the oldest surviving building on the Canterbury Plains.
Built in 1844 by the Scottish Deans brothers, it was constructed of local totara, matai and kahikatea wood, with a shingle roof. It was restored in 1950, and is to be found in central Christchurch, surrounded by Riccarton Bush, all gifted to the city by the Deans family.
The cottage is open to the public and contains displays of historic items loaned and assembled by the Canterbury Museum.
