Welfare Hall
Today we have been to Beamish Musuem. At the moment the museum is in the process of building a 1950's town and the first building to open is the Welfare Hall. I have enclosed a photo of the hall in my extras. It is a replica of the actual Leasingthorne Colliery Welfare Hall & Community Centre which was funded by the miners and opened in 1957. The original hall is still open and thriving.
Welfare halls were at the heart of the community and used for many different activities - reading, learning, clinics, playgroups etc. to name a few.
I have attached a few extras from our visit.
