Freedom

My mom got up from the bench we were sitting on in Cordata Park, saying she was going to play with the dogs. Instead, she walked across the uneven, sloping field, out of my field of vision. I was not worried because I knew I could catch up to her before she got close to any streets or houses, but it was an odd realization: this was the farthest she'd ever been from me while in my care.

I would like to have given her a bit more freedom and seen what she'd do with it, but when I followed her across the field she saw me and waited. Still, I imagine she enjoyed being alone and in charge of her own destiny for those few minutes.
