102 RPM
Yep, that’s all this engine does....the heartbeat of the ship and at that speed it generates 38,000 hp!
A bit of a treat on the final day of visit to Brazil, a wander around a 33,000 tonne juice tanker, with special attention to the engine room! I’ve been before, however this time we went inside and then right down to the prop shaft at the stern. A hydraulic slip ring on the 700 mm shaft is used for the variable pitch propellor. And this engine can run with only one turbo and a cylinder down, which is a good job as it’s the only form of propulsion. Each turbo was a mere 7 tonnes in weight, however strangest of all....its seven cylinders!
Could have spent all day...in fact the next 14, as she sails tonight....however had to go to the airport!
