The sun before the rain

Not a great forecast for the next couple of days, but these mesembryanthemum made the most of the sunny day, which also marks the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.

Reading up about the flowers they were named in 1684, first of all called midday flower, however the name was changed, when it was discovered in 1719 that some species flowered at night!

They are also known as ‘ice plants,’ because the ‘glistening globular bladder cells on the stem, fruit and leaves sparkle like ice crystals.’ Blipfoto - you never stop learning!
