Eilean Glas

We woke to low cloud and the threatened breakdown appeared to have arrived so we went to Tarbert and on east to go to Sgalpaigh to walk to the lighthouse at Eilean Glas. The original lighthouse was the first built in Scotland but was later replaced by the current one. It was pleasantly warm and the sun was trying to get through the haar so the views were good. The blip is a view of the lighthouse from the west. We then decided to go up to Stornoway to visit the museum at Lews Castle as it wouldn’t be open on the Sunday (along with most things on the island). It was a good look at Island life and they also have 6 of the Lewis Chessmen that were found near Uige. They are on loan from the British Museum, that has the majority of the hoard the remaining 11 are in Edinburgh. We then cycled around the grounds before heading up towards Tholastaidh where we stopped for the night on a loop of old road. We only had 3 nights in the holiday when the midges were bad and it was each Saturday evening, so we stayed with the door shut as they swarmed about. The collage is another memorial to the clearances, this specifically about Lord Lever, four of the Lewis Chessmen, a sign that sums up Lewis and a view from near Eilean Glas.

Yesterday’s blip.
