Wound up in Wexford

Unidentified grain

We took a nice gentle walk this morning, up to Groton, where there is a mulberry bush allegedly planted in 1550 by the grandfather of John Winthrop, who founded Boston, Massachusetts.  It is celebrated locally as "the last surviving physical link between our forbears who braved the journey to New England" sic.  We spent some time in this field,  helping to reunite Bertie, a little white terrier type dog, with his mum.

We then popped into the local hostelry for a refreshing pint before walking back to Boxford alongside a field where this grain was growing.  I presume it is some type of wheat - it doesn't look like barley, oats or rye.  But I've not been able to find it using Google.

We then spent most of the afternoon watching the tennis from Wimbledon, before walking down into Boxford village, where unfortunately the local pub had a large party and was unable to feed us for over an hour.  So we walked back up to Groton, had a lovely meal at the pub there, and meandered home in a gorgeous balmy evening.

Edited 16th Jul.  Grass now identified as Canary Grass, Phalaris canariensis.
