Cycling along the Lune
Saturday 13th July 2019
It took us a while to get going after a late night. We put the bikes on the car and were away by 11am.
We parked at the Lune aqueduct in Lancaster and cycled along the river Lune to Glasson Docks. Huddsbird wanted to do a photo project, photographing the alphabet letters in different things, so it took us quite a while to get to Glasson docks as we kept stopping. We stopped for lunch at Conder Green, sitting on the old station platform. Just after we set off we stopped again for another photograph. I put my bike on the stand but it toppled over with a big bang. Unfortunately the chain fell off in the process. We were trying to put it back on when a gentleman stopped, obviously a bike enthusiast, and insisted on getting his hands dirty putting it back on for us. We were very grateful and thanked him, and his wife for lending her husband!
After that trauma we treated ourselves to a lovely icecream in Glasson docks - "thunder and lightning" flavour! Delicious! (extra) That gave us energy to continue on to Cockersands Abbey (extra). We had to leave the bikes and walk the last bit as it wasn't possible to cycle, even though the route we were following indicated that it was. The abbey is now quite a strange little building. It does have the old mosaic floor but sadly it is only open a couple of days a year, not today.
We returned to the bikes via the beach, doing a bit of beach combing along the way. We then found a route on the roads which met up with the original route away from the abbey. We circled back to Glasson docks and then back along the Lune the way we had come. About 20 miles in total.
By the time we reached the car we were very hot and thirsty. A quick McDonalds milkshake did the trick. We tried to call in at a fish and chip shop in Lancaster but there was no parking near by. After circling round twice we gave up and headed home, using the scenic route from Preston down through Burscough, where we finally stopped for fish and chips and ate them sitting on the canal bank.
It was quite late when we got home. Another great day packed with different things. Huddsbird then had to head back to hers. Physivic enjoyed the day out and the ride too!
