Olav’s wood

A very enjoyable afternoon that wasn’t quite what we planned.

I’d arranged to visit the Cairns dig on South Ronaldsay with a friend who is an archaeologist. We somehow managed to have got our dates wrong and arrived on the last day of the dig just as they had finished wrapping everything up.

As well as arriving too late we managed to get the car stuck in the mud and had to get shoved out by the diggers.

Despite the fact the broch was now wrapped up in black plastic and tyres for the winter it was still pretty impressive, huge structure and in a fantastic location. We’ve agreed to go next year.

On our way back we stopped off for a wander around Olaf’s Wood, lovely wee woodland, which we managed to get lost in!!!! But we made it out and then stopped in the Hope for a coffee and cake on the way home.
