Happy New Year to You n Yours, but spare a thought

As we prepare to bring in the New Year many of us will be lucky enough to find ourselves surrounded by loved ones. Yet, there's a chance you've had someone close to your heart affected by cancer.

Our final Blipfoto of 2012 is dedicated to beautiful Aillidh Kinnaird, pictured above, and Aila Coull who were both lost to Acute Myeloid Leukaemia this year.

Acute Myeloid Leukaemia remains one of the least curable of childhood cancers and The Kiltwalk want to help do something about that through our association with Yorkhill Children's Foundation and The Aila Coull Foundation.

Yorkhill Children's Foundation have been added as a core charity partner of the Kiltwalk in memory of Aila Coull who passed away in September 2012, aged 16 months.

Aila's Mum Sine and Auntie Kirsty had already signed up to do the Kiltwalk when Aila was diagnosed with Leukemia in January 2012. Inspired by the care and support that Aila and the family were receiving from Yorkhill's Schehallion Ward, Kirsty organised a team of 30 family and friends to do the Speyside Kiltwalk. They raised £25,000 with Yorkhill receiving 50%.

Although Aila and Aillidh sadly lost their fight against the illness, we hope the Kiltwalk funding Yorkhill will receive in the future will help to save the lives of other children struck down by the illness.

Yorkhill Children's Foundation provides enhanced medical equipment and resources which benefit sick children and babies who are treated at Yorkhill Hospital and within NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. These can include innovative medical equipment, improvements in child and family facilities and pediatric research and training.

For those who have lost, for those still battling this disease, for the parents dealing with the loss of their child or watching their little one undergo grueling treatment then as 2012 draws to a close let's all take a moment and think of them and others who have lost loved ones in the last 12 months.

Finally, as the clock ticks down towards midnight then why not make "taking part in The Kiltwalk in 2013" your New Year's resolution and help us to help as many Scottish Children as possible.
