Going It, Not So Alone

Jewelry

The ever present weight of my Aunt Jan's passing was brought up again in my family tonight, when my grandmother, my mom and her siblings sat down to decide what to do with Jan's jewelry. She had a lot of beautiful things, and a bunch of pieces that you can see her in when you look at them.
It seems a cruel task, dividing up her belongings. But we have to keep in mind that Jan would have preferred her things remain with those she loved rather than be sold or given away. And after the 'adults' spent their time choosing and reminiscing, Grandma asked three of my cousins and myself if we wanted anything, and we each took one or two necklaces and earrings.
The red necklace is made of paper, old magazines and things, my aunt just kept saying "in Africa, from Africa." It's very pretty, and one of those fascinations Jan and I shared. And the chain made of metal circles and links is something Jan wore A LOT, I remember a few outfits she loved pairing it with.
I just kind of like the blue beads and didn't want the black ones to go to waste.
I also chose two pairs of earrings that make me feel older and business-like, the way Jan used to dress, always so professional.
My Aunt Jean said to me tonight, I wear the most jewelry out of anyone in the family, and it made me laugh :) The night had its share of happy and sad moments.
I will always miss Aunt Jan, and despite the sadness involved, I love having everyday things to remember her by.
