Lions, and babies, oh my
Tonight the zoo was open after hours for members, always a lovely treat to see the nocturnal animals more active, and the crowds a bit thinner.
My favorite photo of the night is the main one of the African lions, male and female. They were settling in for the night.
The next big attraction was the two day old reticulated giraffe, in extras. I watched her being born on Saturday, via the "birth cam" in the stall. It amazes me how quickly they transform from a helpless wet mess of long legs tangled up with a long neck, into a frolicking six foot tall giraffe. Here you can see that her osicones (the little hairy "horns") are still not fully erect as they stay flattened down for the birth.
The last extra is of a mom oraguntan sleeping with her baby by her side. A perfect ending to the night exhibit.
