Bogside murals
This morning was grey and damp - what a reversal of yesterday's weather. But we still went ahead with our plan to visit Derry before continuing on to Belfast and the Airport.
Arriving in Derry, the rain held off - just - for us to walk the Walls (Derry is one of only a few completely walled cities). Then we went down to the Bogside to the Museum of Free Derry. On the way we passed the remarkable murals decorating the gable ends of houses, which depict key events in the Troubles and are known as the People's Gallery. Gordon and I had been to the Museum on our first visit and we found it much changed in a new building, but still telling the history of the Bogside, the Civil Rights Movement and the events of Bloody Sunday through photographs, newspaper reports, film and the first hand accounts of witnesses. The place is staffed by people who have a direct link with people who died during those times. Thought-provoking indeed.
We later found a great place for lunch, although we had to wait for a table, as the place was full of families celebrating graduation day. Then we drove in the rain to Belfast Airport and said goodbye to our visitors. What a wonderful few days we have had.
Thank you for all the comments etc. on my Causeway blip. I have been a bit out of things for a few days - it's always a full-on time when we spend a weekend with our daughter and son-in-law. Just look where we were on this day the year before last.
