L’acqua finita

A missive from our water consortium (co-op might be a better word). The 70 households are told to use water only for domestic use, sanctions to be taken against offenders.

These little cooperative water supply organisations were encourage by the 1952 government in Italy’s mountainous areas. Basically the peasantry gave their time and effort to share water resources and bring tapped water to their houses. Springs and streams were linked with covered holding tanks first using steel and then copper pipes and latterly polypropylene. It must have been a huge effort with pick and shovel at a time when areas such as ours were suffering rapid rural depopulation.

Consortium members pay an amazing €70 annually for their water supply.

Of course not being on the mains has its drawbacks and the system relies on members being considerate of their neighbour.

Now the 3,000 litre tank of rainwater comes into play but that will only last for a week or ten days.
