I seem to be developing a bad habit of trying out a new toy and then falling in love with it. I started Blip with a little point and click Vivitar camera. It did me fine for what I was doing. I could point it at something, press a button and I got a photograph. It was all I needed to do, after all, I didn't really believe in digital photography, they're not -real- pictures. Then in the summer of 2009 I visited my parents. My mum had recently got a bridge camera and having a little play with that it began to open my eyes to what I could do with photography. Soon after, I got my own Panasonic Lumix fz28. In May 2011 that was stolen and the kind people at the insurance company replaced it with the Lumix fz45, a better zoom and a few extra features.
Christmas 2011 my mum got a nice new remote flash unit. I love my macros and still life photography and with just a tiny pop up flash on my own camera, I loved her flash gun. By my birthday in March I had my very own. It has come in very handy on many occasions.
Through that time my mum borrowed a Canon 300D and then bought a 30D. Recently she's upgraded again. That meant that when we visited this Christmas, her 30D was available for me to have a play with. For the first time since I started Blip I once again felt like I was taking photos as they should be. A satisfying weight in your hand, that lovely click noise that you only get on an SLR, the ability to turn the lens, even change the lens if you want! I grew up with an SLR and once again I had that lovely feeling of one in my hands, albeit with the added benefits of the digital age.
Today we travelled back up to Edinburgh and the 30D has come with me. In time I will save up for a bigger zoom lens but in the time being I will learn with and enjoy what I have. Thanks Mum!
