Dining Al Fresco

The phrase al fresco is borrowed from the Italian for 'in the cool.' However it is not in current use in that language and the expression al fresco usually refers to spending time in jail. I wonder if the English expression,' in the cooler' for being in jail, could be referred to as spending time al fresco !  Another thought, was it meant to cool you off after your crimes ?
