King Billy Mural

We took a 90-minute tour this morning, focusing on the innumerable murals in the Protestant and Catholic areas in Belfast.  It was organized by Black Cab Tours and led by an superb guide. Well-paced and thorough, we found it utterly fascinating.  This happened to be the first mural we stopped at, in the Protestant area of Shankill. It depicts the victor in the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 (described at length in yesterday's blip), King William of Orange*  (dubbed King Billy by Protestants). The orange lilies are Protestant symbols (the Catholics' are white). The afternoon was mainly devoted to Wimbledon, most notably an exciting victory by Cori Gauff, a 15-year-old from the United States playing in her first major.
