Birnbeck Pier

We had a day out at Weston-Super-Mare today, walking along the front to the derelict Birnbeck Pier at the northern end of the promenade. The pier enjoyed its heyday in the Victorian era, when pleasure boats left for trips along the coast and over the Bristol Channel to Wales. It also housed the old lifeboat house; you can just see it and the ramp at the end of the pier. I believe it's the only pier to connect the mainland with an island, albeit a small one!

From here we walked the footpath through Weston Woods to Sand Bay, which runs alongside the coast with views of the Channel and Welsh coast. It has the added benefit of reaching a pub after about 30 minutes where we refuelled before the return journey. Having lived in Somerset for nearly 40 years and visited Weston on many occasions, we never knew this path existed but we'll definitely be back to walk it again.
