Sleepless night...
It was about incidents that are now happening in Hong Kong. I am very confused at times, for different political stances of the people around me. My family's stance, my friends', my workplaces', my girlfriend's and mine.
I don't really have a stance to start with. For a long long time since secondary education, I developed quite a strong suspicion towards all kinds of political ideologies, whether it is socialism, democracy or even autocracy.
I simply believe each of them has pros and cons. And they could be good at different scenarios and times. You may say I am politically inactive.
Nowadays, most youngsters in Hong Kong are craving for full democracy. They think democracy can be the solution for all kinds of social problems in Hong Kong such as wealth inequality and the housing problem, and results in a politically legitimate cabinet.
In my understanding, democracy requires that people fully understand the dynamics of politics and economics, and how to pick a trustworthy and capable representative. So it always comes to the question, whether this place is ready for it.
Everytime I open Facebook, where I can have a concept of how people react to political events, the answers are increasingly telling me, Hong Kong is not ready. I never unfollowed anyone. But I don't know why, what I see online in the feed are almost all one-sided. The local media, personal opinions, articles, and the comments. Perhaps I fall in the young generation range, and they all share similar thoughts. And I can clearly tell the content I find is provoking emotions with clear stance. Media like Apple Daily, Stance News, HK Radio, TVMost. They are all targeted at condemning Communist Party in China, the Hong Kong government, and the police who took order to defend main streets and government building but found using 'abusive' power during 2014 and 2019 protests.
I'm not saying Communist Party is any good. They ban Facebook and Google for whatever national security reason, and perform censorship on politically sensitive topics, and even jail dissidents, arguing this is necessary for the Central government to keep the country stable. Perhaps. But the means to achieve it is unjustified for many of us who have been enjoying freedoms and believe in universal values.
However, the online content in social media does always make false accusations on the situations in China as well. The coverage of news are all skewed to the negative side. Their content is entertaining to read, as they love to make fun of the opposition side. The intent of the media is quite apparent if you step back and look at it.
After Umbrella Movement, the social media platform is once again flooded during Extradition Bill controversy. Not only do a lot of radical opinion came out, but also personal attacks to the opposite side, and even ones with neutral stance. Some opinions are so radical that, they would tell people to unfriend them if they think oppositely. They are intolerent of opposite voice, yelling they are "5 dime (a rumor about 5 dime is rewarded for a pro-government online comment"). They constantly refer police as dogs and insulted them any way they feel happy. They conjured up all kinds of illustrative diagrams and comics to guide people to think the exact same way. On July 1, the radical protesters even vandalized the legislature.
This phenomenon is exactly what I hate the most, and therefore I can't join with their quest for real democracy. Their behaviour is naive and hatred causing. I think they are not behaving up to the standard of democracy. They are destroying the efforts we made to have democracy progress by going violent. Being desperate is not an excuse for violent acts in a government building!
I'm posting this because I am sleepless after an argument with my girlfriend several hours ago...it was about a facebook post she shared earlier which condemns people with neutral stance in Hong Kong, saying they have personality issues because they ignore how bad police is treating protesters, how bad government is making policies, and so on. It says they can be like Hitler, who if not angry can be polite and look kind. And then she said I am too sensitive because my neutral stance is different from theirs...so her post is not pointed at me. But still, I just tell her I don't feel comfortable anyways.
I feel bad after all because I started the conversation and it turns bad and it was a bad timing. She told me she fell sick...and it was about time to sleep for us.
Sun is rising now here.
