Avocado Dyeing
We didn't dye the avocados, we dyed with the avocado peels and pits. A most enjoyable afternoon at a local craft studio. We practiced on square silk scarves, tying or fastening the fabric in various ways to produce designs. The thing in the pot with all the clothespins is my pleated piece; the clips are meant to act as a resist, and you can see from the middle picture that it worked! Every pinch of the clothespins remained white, while the rest of the fabric turned a lovely champagne color. If we'd been able to leave our designs in the pot for a few more hours the color would deepen and become pinker. The final shot is of my three samples, all different techniques. I have no idea what I'm going to do with these things, but they are lovely to look at. It makes me want to try other dyes from plants, and then I could have even more squares!
btw it took me for ever to figure out this triptych. I don't know what I was doing wrong, but I kept getting really tiny film strips. It still doesn't work the way I hoped, but enough is enough...
