Day 1 - St John's
Starting to explore St John's, beginning with Signal Hill, a significant military placement from the 18th Centrury and a signal station from the moment it was the receiving station of the first transatlantic radio message by Marconi from London. Interestingly a week ago I was in the building in London where that message was sent This was wild flowers looking over the passage into St John's harbour.
On the way down, we passed these student in period military uniforms practicing for a tattoo and then came across this statue of a Newfoundland dog and a Labrador. I obviously knew of the Newfoundland connection, but had no idea that the Labrador was bred from the Newfoundland and named after the next province!
Then off to Quidi Vidi Harbour just outside St John's. Very picturesque and a wonderful name. We are coming across some very strange names, and I think that they are going to become stranger!
