Kiwiana

My Dear Fellows & Dear Princess,

I am sure you are well-used to the sorts of shops that sell Scottish tat. I passed several of them daily when I worked in Edinburgh city centre. You could always tell because there were Banners of Scotland and Saltire Crosses flying outside, and Red Hot Chili Piper CD's blaring from their front doors.

Inside, you'd find souvenir boxes of oatcakes or fudge. Next to Nessie t-shirts and See-You Jimmy hats.

Tasteful.

I expect Germany is much the same. I know, Auslaender, you never took us into the shop with the World's Biggest Cuckoo Clock outside, but I'm guessing that inside you can buy tankards and tea-towels and Nena CD's.

So here is the Kiwi version. These shops are up and down Lambton Quay, some more tasteful than others. This one is probably somewhere in the middle.

Cuddly Kiwi plushies - Tick
Koru design wooden coasters - Tick
Wellington stubby-holders - Tick
Boxes of "Sheep Droppings" chocolates - But of course

I don't know why I had a look inside today. I think it was something to do with trying to find a reason not to go back to the office. Or maybe I just had a sudden craving for droppings.

Anyway, that's all of your Xmas parcels taken care of...

S.
