To prove that it’s not only goldfinches that love sunflower hearts.
A lovely morning wander around the park at Calke Abbey. It was also one of the rare occasions when the magnificent Staunton Harold Church was open. Built in defiance of Oliver Cromwell, they suggest that the dog painted on the original ceiling represents him (Extra).
Poppyfields update.
There’s a fantastic field developing near Melbourne. It’s on the right, coming from Melbourne, between the two marked turnings for Calke Abbey (but nowhere to park or stop.)
And just outside Lichfield there are a couple of promising patches, visible from the A38 before the road splits.
