After the recent wedding the heels broke on my favourite sandals so I was pleased when the shoe repairer said that it was still possible to repair them.  I don’t know if this shoe has been mended but it was discarded in 1566 when the heel broke.  It belonged to Mary Queen of Scots who was visiting Jedburgh at the time for an important meeting of her lords. The shoe had been passed down through the family since and is now in Mary Queen of Scots House in Jedburgh where there are several memorabilia of her.   As she was almost six feet tall she must have towered over most of her subjects in her high heels.
(Extra) On the way back from  Hermitage Castle she was thrown from her horse while crossing a bog and lost her watch. Remarkably it was found 250 years later in a mole hill and is also on display in the house.
This is part of my occasional series on places connected with the famous, but tragic, Mary Queen of Scots (see the tags)
