We've taken over organising lifeguards for the swimming club. It was supposed to be fairly straight forward as the lifeguards will sort themselves out - if they are responsible enough to be trusted to save lives, they are responsible enough to arrange cover. Yesterday at 17:13 the one on duty sent a WhatsApp asking someone to take over her session from 18:00 to 21:00. Slight panic, as the WhatApp group is not yet set up properly - only the 3 who replied were added. At 17:37 we were asked whether one can work 18:00 to 19:00 and another 19:00 to 21:00. We didn't know if that was allowed, but agreed to avoid swimming having to be cancelled due to no lifeguard.
We arrived at the pool at 17:55, ready to swim for an hour and ... the pool was closed a few minutes earlier due to too much chlorine. As the pool was locked we couldn't get in to get he telephone numbers of the other committee members to ask what to do (haven't gotten around to adding them to our phone). After a few e-mails and when it seemed that our session was informed, we went home. Then the texts started re payment of the lifeguards for the evening. It was all sorted to everyone's satisfaction (it seems), but if was a bit of a shock in the first week we were taking over the duties. And we weren't even allowed wine (by ourselves) to calm our nerves.
