Trier
On our way back home we visited Trier.
Parts of the Cathedral of Trier are from 329 and so it is the eldest church of Germany. It has an interesting relic, the Holy Robe. The Seamless Robe of Jesus (also known as the Holy Robe, the Holy Tunic, the Honorable Robe, and the Chiton of the Lord) is said to have been worn by Jesus during or shortly before his crucifixion.
The cathedral is comlpeted with the Early Gothic Church of Our Lady.
It has a Round Cruciform Floorplan (Like a rose) and is very impressive, too.
I also loved the cloister yard. The Gothic cloisters were built between 1245 and 1270. They connect the Cathedral and the Church of Our Lady.
Trier also has a very rich and interesting history. Founded by the Celts in the late 4th century BC as Treuorum and conquered 300 years later by the Romans, who renamed it Augusta Treverorum ("The City of Augustus among the Treveri"), Trier has a good title for being considered Germany's oldest city.
One famous remains of the Romans is the Porta Nigra.
The Porta Nigra was built in grey sandstone after 170 AD as a poart of a Romain city. In the early Middle Ages the Roman city gates were no longer used for their original function and their stones were taken and reused for other buildings. The Porta Nigra survived, because the Greek monk Simeon lived as a hermit in the ruins of the Porta Nigra. After his death (1035) and sanctification, the Simeonstift monastery was built next to the Porta Nigra to honor him. To save it from further destruction, the Porta Nigra was transformed into a church. In 1804, Napoleon ordered that the Porta Nigra be converted back to its Roman form.
Claude and Sheila (see extra) were exploring a modell of the former large Roman city of Trier. There are still lots of Roman remains to find in Trier.
It was well worth a visit.
After the visit of Trier we visited our son P. at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld. It was our first visit since he moved there in May for continuing his studies there. I think it's a good place to live and study. :-)
On our way home we had also a stop im Worms to visit our son M.
It was the first visit in his new apartment and we had a lovely time :-)
We returned to our home very late and full of new impressions.
