The husband and I drove past this statue in Preston a few months ago when we were trying to get to Blackpool over a bank holiday weekend.  At the time, there was nowhere to stop so I could take a photo but would you believe the statue is at the bottom of the road by my new office!  The extra shows the statue from the other side.

The plaque by the Preston Martyrs Statue says it is "in memory to those workers who were shot and killed on or near this monument on Saturday 13th August 1842 during the Chartist led strike in order to secure a fair day's pay for a fair day's toil.

Bernard McNamara, aged 17
William Lancaster, aged 25
George Sowerbutts, aged 19
John Mercer, aged 27

Other workers were also very seriously injured and were unable to ever work again.  Remember the dead, fight for the living."
