Notice Anything....?
Which number do you think is unlucky in China (hence it is missing from this lift's panel of buttons)?
The reason this number is unlucky is because it sounds very similar to the Chinese word for death 'si'.
This kind of practice is frowned upon by the Powers That Be in Beijing as old-fashioned superstitious nonsense and they have tried to ban it. But as those very same PTB are so fond of claiming, China has a history of civilization of 5000 years. So good luck trying to get people to stop believing in their traditional ideas.
Actually not every lift (elevator) follows this system but it's not that rare either. Also mobile phone numbers, car number plates etc that end in a 4 are pretty cheap while those that end in a 6 or even better an 8 are more expensive.
