Exploring

Woke (very early!) to bright sunshine and the harbour looking lovely. After breakfast we wandered up to the headland and enjoyed the sparkling sea, the very craggy rocks sticking up around the shore (great geology around here!) and the possible glimpses of a seal (extra). Very sad remembrance stone for 5 young men lost in a fishing boat in 2004...and 3 of them with the same surname. This little community must still be scarred by such a tragedy.
We headed off to Wigtown and had a lovely wander round this little book town. Bit like a smaller version of Hay on Wye and tempting to maybe try it out one year - Sept/October time. Lovely wide Main Street with varied styles of houses all around and a large community garden and bowls lawn in the middle. We found a fabulous cafe that was obviously the owner’s pride and joy - full of books and armchairs, a pretty flower filled garden and a vast array of delicious looking cakes (extra - too full from breakfast to try one though).
After coffee we headed on to Galloway forest but the first two visitor centres/trail starts we tried didn’t really have walks set up. Feels like there’s a lot of development going on but not quite finished. Eventually found the right place and we had a good wander through the forest - lovely mixed groups of trees, streams running over stones and a couple of small lochs with water lilies. The trees in a few places were covered with moss, although it was dry, and looked very eery (extra).
Got slightly lost on the way back to the car but it was fine and a couple of runners/cyclists pointed us in the right direction.
We popped into a wildlife hide and saw lots of different birds including a brightly coloured jay and two red squirrels and some voles. Lovely to be so close to them.
Drove to the B&B (much more upmarket than last night!) and after a cup of tea and a rest we headed to the Clachan Inn for supper. Fabulous menu - hard to choose what to have as everything looked delicious! Ate way too much but gorgeous, then home for a bit of TV and bed. Lovely day
