Silver Birch

Today I went to the Artic Circle! I was really excited about it. The road from Kuusamo is pretty straight and the landscape very regular but very beautiful.

I was really struck by the silver birches covered in ice. They are so beautiful. This picture doesn't really show it so you'll just have to believe me.

I visited the museum in Rovaniemi which covers Lapland and the arctic. Learnt a lot about birch, apparently you can use it to make flour, bags and a lot more. Porridge is made of the birch bark flour and reindeer fat! :-( Think I'll be sticking to oats.

It was a great day, on the way back the sunset was made up of many different colours, stripes in the sky, turquoise, purple, pink and orange. Unfortunately my pictures of the sunset were a bit rubbish.

I should've said this is a lake iced over. Apparently at this time of year the ice is between 1 and 2 ft in depth. This was taken on the way to Rovaniemi in the morning.
