Exploding Volcano

We have been reading 'The Snail and the Whale' by Julia Donaldson at school and on his adventures around the world the snail sees fiery volcanos so today we decided to recreate a volcano with a group of children we built the volcano around a large cup using sand we then added some water, some red food colouring (to represent the red hot lava), some washing up liquid, some baking powder and then we added some vinegar (myself and A.the HLTA held our breath in case it didn't work) but low and behold it started to bubble and the lava started to overflow the children were amazed by it and thought it was great fun.
