Sycamore Gap
Another day, another section of Hadrian's wall.
It seems this is one of the most photographed trees in the UK. I can understand that, as everyone who passes it seems to want to take a picture of themselves and their party. Impossible to get a pic of the tree without including people.
What I had missed (because I have somehow missed the film) is its connection to Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.
Extra - a big archaeological dig at Vindolanda. The volunteers were a real international cross section. Difficult to know what is going on, but I think they were uncovering evidence of the first Roman fort on the site, which preceded the building of the Wall.
The international nature of the Wall - volunteers and visitors - is reflected in those who manned it - people from modern day Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Romania and Germany.
