Exploring the northern coast of St. Mary’s
Tuesday
The morning was wet, so we decided to stay put on St. Mary’s rather than visiting another island. We wandered down into town, stopping on the way to have a peek in the parish church - they have some quite nice stained glass - and also browsed around the small art exhibition they had in in a sort of pavilion building. Next, we went to the museum and explored the exhibits on the history and archeology, ship building, shipwrecks, and the gig races, ornithology and other aspects of island life. It was still wet when we went outside - not heavy, just a persistent light rain - so we decided to take the bus to a cafe on the east side of the island, in the hopes that it would eventually stop, and we could go walking round the northern section of the island. As you can see from my blip, it not only stopped raining while we enjoyed our very nice crab sandwiches with a side salad, but as we walked, it developed into a gorgeous sunny afternoon! Along the way, we passed several beautiful white sandy beaches, as well as the Bronze Age burial chambers of Innisdgen and the ancient Iron Age village site of Halangy Down, with its interlinked little round stone houses. We worked our way round, reaching Juliet’s Garden in time for a cream tea - we were fairly good, we shared one! Another grand day in the Scilly Isles! I have posted a couple of extra images.
